Panning to show motion.

For the most part, photography is all about freezing a moment in time, but there are times when freezing the moment is not gonna work to tell the full story in that shot. Sometimes freezing the action fails to pay homage to the action going on on the field, or the track. There's a technique for that and it's called panning, and that is where you use a slower shutter speed and move the camera a little while following a moving subject, in other words you have to synchronize the movement of your camera with the movement of your subject and the purpose is to get a nice and crispy subject and the background blurred to show motion.

A couple things that will help for practicing this techniq... continue reading...

Can you tell the difference?

This two images are taken just about 10 minutes apart, the first one taken with the smartphone camera and processed with the android APP vs the second one taken with a DSLR digital camera and processed in photoshop. You sure notice the vibrant and nice colors of the second image that's the result of being able to control how much light you let in the shot. What happens with cell phone cameras is that they are very limited and sometimes put you in situations that you just can't get the shot, in other words you can not operate a cell phone the way you do with a DSLR camera and that's because the camera that comes in your smartphone is automatic and most people use it the way it comes, almost no one bother to mess with their cell phone camera settings or they are very very limited on what you can do. My phone for example I can only mess with the ISO, seriously? continue reading...

Surreal vs real.

What is your decision on this shot, is it real or not?

I decided to do this post cause I was accused of applying photo manipulation to it on some social network, and I'm not saying for any meaning that photo manipulation is not allowed, a lot of people do it and a lot of them make a living out of it, I do as well sometimes, "rarely I do it, but I do it, but when I do it" I either say it in my description or post the picture in its respective category for example if I post a picture on 500px and I have done some sort of manipulation to it, I post it in the fine art category and also say what I did on my description, that way I don't feel like I am fooling anyone.  Let me tell you the story behind this shot, This waterfall is called... continue reading...

How to use natural light.

What would you do if you get asked for a type of shot like this and you only work with natural light?

Let me tell you it was a little bit of a challenge for me as well, first and we all (photographers) know it's impossible to get it all at once, you could get the sun setting nicely, but the two person would be totally underexposed; You could get them nicely captured and exposed, but you would get a blown out sky; You could get a silhouette, but that is not the case here. So how would you go through this kind of situation and still get the shot perfectly exposed? Let me break it in two pieces. a) On the field, (this must be done using tripod or some sort of stabilization) In order to perform this type of shot you have to pres... continue reading...
